The Dimensions of Jesus’ Ministry

21 Days of Giving

26 Jan The Dimensions of Jesus’ Ministry

Mark’s Jesus-story begins like an action-packed movie trailer. Jesus moves with his ‘band of brothers’ (Peter and Andrew, James and John) from the synagogue to a house, to the town, and out into the surrounding region. All the while Jesus’ sphere of influence is expanding; adoring crowds are growing exponentially.

Jesus has impact. The Jewish synagogue, accustomed to dreary sermons, is roused by Jesus’ authoritative address. He is interrupted by a demoniac, who issues a challenge from the ‘dark side.’ The supernatural conflict is brief; Jesus silences the evil spirit and delivers the demon-possessed man. Jesus quickly moves out, healing the sick and relieving the afflicted in ever-expanding circles. The crowds are awed, astonished and amazed; they gather to gawk at Jesus, the wisdom-teacher, powerful exorcist, and miraculous healer. The casual reader might sympathize with the crowd. But is this how Mark wants us to view Jesus? The careful reader suspects not.

Jesus has compassion on the situation of people but his priority is proclaiming God’s kingdom message and producing disciples. Through prayer with God, His Father, Jesus received renewed energy and direction for ministry. He got clear not to continue his work in Capernaum, but to go to nearby villages—a new initiative. If we spend time daily in prayer with God we will also be energized for work and/or inspired for new initiatives. Mark implies Jesus’ main focus was on gospel proclamation and producing disciples. Ours should be too.
